Gender equality: EU Award for universities, research organizations and higher education institutions

The European Commission has launched the first EU Award for Gender Equality Champions which aims to recognize the outstanding results achieved by academic, higher education and research institutions in the implementation of gender equality measures.

Applications are open until 13 October 2022. The Award, which intends to advance inclusive gender equality plans and policies in the framework of the new European Research Area, is open to universities, higher education institutions and public and private research organizations based in an EU Country or a Horizon Europe Associated Country. The initiative aims to complement and boost the requirement for higher education and research organizations to have in place a Gender Equality Plan (GEP) as an eligibility criterion for receiving funding under the Horizon Europe Programme.

With a total budget of 400,000, the EU Award for Gender Equality Champions is divided into three categories:

  • Sustainable Gender Equality Champions, for organizations that can demonstrate a significant and sustained record of activity and a high level of achievement through the implementation of their Gender Equality Plan.
  • Newcomer Gender Equality Champions, for organizations that have recently started implementing a Gender Equality Plan and can demonstrate the most progress in its implementation and achieved results.
  • Inclusive Gender Equality Champions, for organizations that have developed the most innovative inclusive Gender Equality Plan addressing intersections with other social categories such as ethnicity, social origin, sexual orientation and gender identity (LGBTI+) or disability.

Each applicant can only apply to one category. There will be 2 winners in the first category and 1 winner in each of the other two categories. Each winner will receive 100,000 euro.
