Energy, Italy joined the EoCoE-III project on renewable energy

The EoCoE-III 3-year project, funded under the European High Performance ComputingJoint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU), aims at making the EU a global leader in supercomputing.

The project aims to optimize the performance of energy sources, such as photovoltaic, hydroelectric, wind energy and, in the future, also nuclear fusion energy, by using new generation supercomputers that can solve a trillion operations per second.

Computer science experts in renewable sources from 18 European organizations, both public and private, have joined the project. Italy participates with ENEA, CNR and the Universities of Trento and Rome Tor Vergata.

The computing power of these supercomputers will help develop applications capable of virtually and reliably reproducing, on a real scale, natural phenomena of energy interest. With regard to the production of hydroelectric energy, for example, the models obtained with supercomputing will obtain continuous spatio-temporal information in order to make predictions and projections on the performance of, for example, water basins. In wind energy, simulations will be able to optimally clarify the dynamics of air flows within a wind farm. This analysis will help enhance this sector, making it more cost-effective thanks to the reduction in energy losses estimated to be between 20% and 30%.
