A new agreement regarding the full operation of SIASGE, the Italian-Argentinian satellite system for disaster management and economic development, has reinforced cooperation between Italy and Argentina in the space sector.
The agreement was signed by Giorgio Saccoccia, President of the Italian Space Agency (ASI), and Raul Kulichevsky, Executive Director of the Comisión Nacional de Actividades Espaciales (CONAE).
The focus of the agreement is the SIASGE Earth Observation project: a unique system in the world with radar technology for civil use, launched in the 2000s, made up of Italy’s first-generation COSMO-SkyMed constellation (5 X-band radar satellites) and Argentina’s first-generation SAOCOM constellation (2 L-band radar satellites).
The new agreement, unlike the previous one, aims to define the terms and conditions of the satellite system that is now entirely in orbit, with particular attention to the use and distribution of data to the communities of users in the two countries and to the international space community.
“The collaboration between Italy and Argentina in space finds today, in the most applicative phase of the two constellations placed in the system, a further confirmation of the value of the relations between the two countries, at an institutional, scientific and industrial level,” said Giorgio Saccoccia.“It represents a model of cooperation that other countries in the region are also looking at to develop autonomous capabilities and acquire remote sensing data. This is happening at a particular time when some nations in the region are also working to build a Latin American Space Agency,” added the ASI President.
