Working together to achieve common goals through systematic environmental monitoring, combining the operational and technological potential of the Guardia di Finanza (GdF) with the scientific expertise of the National Research Council (CNR) is the aim of a Memorandum of Understanding signed by Maria Chiara Carrozza, President of the CNR, and Giuseppe Zafarana, Commander General of the GdF.
The MoU, signed at the headquarters of the General Command of the Guardia di Finanza in Rome, is the result of a productive exchange of views and a 20-year collaboration which has led to the introduction of important innovations in terms of technology, organization and management for the control and protection of the territory and the sea, contributing to the prevention and detection of crimes, the application of sanctions and the fight against threats to human health and the environment.
Thanks to the scientific expertise of the CNR, the Guardia di Finanza, which has innovative technologies for the qualitative observation of the territory, will benefit from skills and know-how in the field of remote sensing, thus increasing its capacity to protect national and European economic and financial interests. GdF and CNR also intend to collaborate in the Arctic, at the Dirigibile Italia Station, for the training of personnel carrying out research on climate change in polar areas.
The effectiveness of the agreement will be facilitated by the distribution of air and maritime units of the GdF across the territory and by the wealthof human resources of the CNR, which can count on approximately 8,500 employees, over 7,000 of whom are engaged in research and research support activities, with a scientific network consisting of 88 Institutes and 7 Departments.
