International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the initiatives in Italy

“Bringing everyone forward for sustainable and equitable development” is the theme of the eighth International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGIS), celebrated each year on 11 February. The initiative was established by the United Nations in 2015 to promote gender equality along with full and equal access to science for women and girls.

This year, the International Day will focus on the role of women and girls in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Special attention will be given to: clean water and sanitation; industry, innovation and infrastructure; sustainable cities and communities; strengthening the means of implementing the SDGs. These topics will be the focus of the big event that will take place on 10 February at the United Nations Headquarters, New York City.

In Italy, a full calendar of events promoted by institutes, universities, schools and associations across the country will offer the opportunity to discuss women’s participation in and significant contribution to science. The National Research Council (CNR), for example, is organizing the fourth “DiscovHER – Donne che fanno Scienza” (“DiscovHER – Women in science”) that will be held in Rome on Friday 10 February. The event, which aims to present the research carried out by CNR women scientists in various fields, can also be attended online via this link. On Saturday 11 February at 16:15, Turin’s planetarium will host an astrotalk with women researchers from the Astrophysical Observatory Turin of the National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF). Tickets for the astrotalk also allow attendees to visit the interactive museum and watch a show in the digital planetarium.

Other national initiatives for day of women and girls in science, both in person and online, can be found on the website of Pikaia, the portal of evolution.
