EU, the Commission published sustainable green transition report

The European Commission has recently published the “Research and Innovation for Climate Neutrality by 2050: Challenges, opportunities and the path forwardReport that aims to provide policy recommendations, principles and solutions needed for a research and innovation agenda that can accelerate sustainable and net-zero impact green transition.

In detail, the report identifies 3 key high-risk areas where significant investments are needed in order to reach climate neutrality within the next 10 to 20 years:

  • Mobility – Built environment – Energy nexus
  • Circularity – Industry – Carbon removals and capture nexus
  • Agrifood – Carbon removals nexus

Besides promoting a systematic approach to achieve net-zero emissions and innovative technological solutions for carbon dioxide removal, the Commission highlighted the risks related to the use of artificial intelligence, synthetic biology and blockchain in accelerating this transition.

Finally, the report advocates the need to prioritize actions involving key third countries to create competitive advantage across the international value chains emerging from the green transition. Further information about the Report is available here.
